Art & Design Corner: Awesome Title Edition

Diggin' In The Crates "Membership Has Its Privleges" Edition
A double feature today...
These two items are the first two releases from the Vinyl Collective Cooperative, a small group of 210 people (this writer included) who bought into a project helmed by Suburban Home Records and its sister all-record store Vinyl Collective. The idea is that the 210 unit holders (paying members) and 10 board members vote on what records in the indie/punk genres that have not previously been released on vinyl should be released in limited numbers. Each title will get a 1000-copy pressing, of which 333 will be one color while the remainder of the pressing (667 copies) is a second color. Unit holders, board members, and those affiliated with the participating bands get copies of the rarer color first; only 40 of the rare color along with all 667 of the other color are put up for sale by Vinyl Collective to the general public.

A copy of the Falcon EP is already undergoing a dogfight on eBay as I write this.

J-Music Clip of the Week
Artists: Teriyaki Boyz ft Pharrell & Chris Brown
Single: Work That
Work That video DL
Latest single from the Teriyaki Boyz featuring Pharrell and Chris Brown, although you barely hear him in the song, not sure if thats necessarily a bad thing though...pretty weak follow up to their last single Zock On and defintely doesn't rank anywhere near the Teriyaki Boyz collabo with Kanye West, I Still Love H.E.R. That song still gets regular rotation in the Montero and on my cellphone, its my defalt ringtone..so enjoy the song, if not,at least the tiny japanese booty's in the PV

Champion of the Week: Homeless Lottery Vulture

I stopped by the 7-11 on Piedmont Ave. last night on my way home to grab a drink and saw a homeless guy who had guilted some old white dude into buying him some food. After the old dude left, the homeless guy hung around to hit up some lady who was checking her lottery tickets. She won a little, and yes, "white guilt" forced her to pass over a couple bucks and then he left the store.
I got up to the counter, bought my drink and also a lottery ticket. As soon as I walked outside, I hear, "...hey man, lemme git half a million..."
Whut the hell? Now he's hitting up people who just bought tickets???
I just kind of laughed and sarcastically said, "Yeah...IF I win."
It was probably a millionth of a second before he replied, "Awright -- I'll remember you!"
What? Did I just make a verbal contract with this guy? Goddammit. Now I don't want to win.
But if I lose, I'm going to find that guy and punch him in the face for jinxing me with his homeless mojo.

Runner up: Tom Sinkovitz of the NBC11 News Team
During the local newscast coverage of Wednesday night's protest/riot in Oakland, newscaster Tom Sinkovitz made a comment, while an image of people jumping on a police car ran, to the effect of "...whenever there's a protest and you get that demographic out there..."
That "demographic?" -- really? I wonder if that's the new politically correct way to be racist.
And toward the end of the newscast Sinkovitz shot himself in foot again with, "...with an incoming Obama administration, you would hope that things like this wouldn't happen. But this is not about racism..."
Uh, nobody was talking about racism until you brought it up just then, Tom.

Tales From The Office: Office Supplies
Question: What's the number one office supply that employees steal?
Answer: I don't know, but I've taken my fair share of post-its, notepads, folders, staplers, staples, staple removers, markers and pens (don't leave me around your cubicle). Sometimes when I'm writing down possible blog topics in my bed, I have to turn and lean on my elbow to make the pen work. It is quite an annoyance. I wish there was a pen designed to specifically remedy that problem.
My wish came true.
Last night while I was organizing supplies in my home studio, I came across an old sketchbook from my college days. Trapped in the spiral binding was a pen given to me from my parent's neighbor while visiting them in Florida a while back. He was writing my father a check from last night's dinner and was showing off his pen. I asked him where he got it and he said it was a gift. I admired it so much that he practically begged me to take his pen. So I did.
I now show to you in all it's glory The Astronaut Pen:

Diggin' In The Crates "Historical Impact" Edition
Kicking off 2009 and YODC's new schedule...
Stumbled across this one last month during an eBay search: A bootleg LP containing demos by legendary first-wave American punk band The Screamers.
Artist: The Screamers
Title: Demos 1977-78
Label: unknown (bootleg)
Vinyl: standard black vinyl

(Sorry for the quality of the photos today, my camera's batteries died and I left the spares in my fiancee's purse this past New Years' Eve. These are from my Blackberry.)
So sayeth Wikipedia:
Unfortunately, the only legitimate release of the Screamers is a live video shot by the good folks at Target Video during the band's heyday (highly recommended by this author, and presently available on DVD thanks to MVD); the opening cut of the video, "122 Hours of Fear", is featured below. The only audio evidence of the band can be found on bootleg LPs like this one, which features the band's 1977 and 1978 demo recordings; according to Jello Biafra, the band was holding out for a major label deal which never came. Imagine the impact the band would have had if Columbia or Warner Bros. had taken a chance.
I haven't played the record yet (I just got it in my PO Box today) so I can't vouch for the sound quality of it. However, given that I was already a fan of the band via their Target Video DVD and knew of their reputation for years beforehand, this was a hell of a lucky find.

So sayeth Wikipedia:
Included among the first wave of LA's punk rockers, the label "techno-punk" was applied to the band by the Los Angeles Times in 1978.[1] The Screamers are widely cited as the pioneers of a genre now known as "synthpunk," and might also be classified as art punk. The Screamers were notable for their unusual instrumentation, featuring electric piano and synthesizer, while omitting guitars. Additional musicians, including violinists and a female vocalist, were occasionally incorporated into their performances.
The group featured a highly developed theatrical presentation that centered around a manic lead vocalist, Tomata du Plenty, whose stage persona one early commentator described as "a psychotic Mickey Rooney."
Though they developed a substantial following and generated considerable press coverage, the Screamers never released a record. In the Don Letts-directed documentary Punk: Attitude (2005) singer Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys cited the Screamers as a key influence on his group, and as one of the great unrecorded groups in rock history, a sentiment echoed by Brendan Mullen, who ran the punk club The Masque.

Taiwan Strikes Again
As I wave goodbye to 2008, I'll mainly remember it as the year I realized that Asian markets are good for more than just illegal fireworks, dangerously greasy food and exotic pets. About a month ago, I raved about Taiwanese/Japanese pop singer Makiyo, whose album Magic Age is one of the funkiest, catchiest CDs I've ever lucked into finding.
Last week, I made my way to the same market, and stumbled onto another Mandarin-language gem. Behold my latest discovery: A-Mei Chang!

Of course, after doing some research I found that A-mei has been one of Taiwan's biggest stars for more than 10 years. But who really defines what "discover" means anyway? It's such a vague word. The CD I got (for a very reasonable $3.95) is entitled Maybe Tomorrow. It features a wide variety of musical styles and great production, but is a lot less "pop" than Makiyo's. And A-mei's voice is truly beautiful.

That alone can tell you what the song's about.
